Pricing for the BYD Shark 6 has been announced at $57,900 before on-road costs and, as promised, the sub-$60k price tag applies to the single, high-spec version of the ground-breaking plug-in hybrid ute launched so far.
At this price point, which is being called an ‘introductory offer’, the electrified Chinese-built dual-cab 4×4 ute undercuts the likes of the Ford Ranger XLT Bi-Turbo dual-cab ($63,640 before on-roads), and the Toyota HiLux SR5 with V-Active Technology ($63,260 before on-roads).
Available to order as of now, ahead of first local customer deliveries in December or January (when the first 2000 examples will become available here), the Shark 6 is the first PHEV ute on sale in Australia, beating the Ford Ranger PHEV and GWM Cannon Alpha Hi-4T to market.

Only a single range-topping Premium version of the Shark 6 is being offered initially, with four exterior paint colour choices and one black interior colour option.
Powering the Shark 6 is a version of the Sealion 6 Premium AWD mid-sized SUV’s 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine that’s longitudinally mounted instead of transversally mounted, plus two electric motors (one on each axle), and a 29.58kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack.
The powertrain produces total outputs of 321kW and 650Nm, sent to all four wheels.
BYD claims an electric-only driving range of 100km (NEDC), and the Shark 6 is claimed to sip as little as 2.0L/100km when running as a hybrid with the battery charged.

The new BYD Shark 6 measures 5457mm long, 1971mm wide and 1925mm tall, sitting on a 3260mm wheelbase.
The BYD Shark 6’s braked towing capacity is down compared to traditional diesel-powered dual-cab 4×4 utes, at 2500kg.
BYD’s local distributor EVDirect has partnered with Australian-based off-road accessory company Ironman 4×4 for the Shark 6, and the first 2000 customers will get a $500 credit towards accessories.
All of the Shark 6’s official Ironman 4×4 accessories will be available only via BYD’s local dealership network. And they’ll all be covered by the vehicle’s six-year, 150,000-kilometre warranty.

Inside, the Shark 6 offers a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless smartphone mirroring, plus a head-up display, 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, wireless phone charging, several power outlet options, faux leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation.
Standard safety equipment includes rear collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, Intelligent Cruise Control, driver fatigue monitoring, a surround-view camera, and front and rear parking sensors.
The BYD Shark 6 will likely be covered by the same six-year, 150,000-kilometre vehicle warranty and eight-year, 160,000-kilometre battery warranty as the rest of the carmaker’s lineup.
