Subaru is readying the seventh-generation Outback, set to debut at the 2025 New York Auto Show. For the first time, it will break away from the Legacy sedan and stand on its own. Here are five things we know about the next-gen 2026 Subaru Outback:
1. Tougher, boxier SUV design
The next-gen Outback will shift toward a more SUV-like appearance, thanks to the freedom from the Legacy platform. Spy shots and official teasers suggest a taller, boxier silhouette with rugged details. Expect an upright front fascia, split headlamps, and a large grille. At the rear, a squarer tailgate and vertical glass enhance the rugged look, while blacked-out pillars and roof racks add outdoor appeal.
2. Upgraded, more functional interior
Inside, the new Outback should have a revamped cabin and more usable space than that of the Forester. A vertical touchscreen, resembling the Toyota Audio Multimedia interface, is visible in prototypes. The setup includes physical climate control buttons and rotary knobs for volume and tuning. A digital gauge cluster will likely offer widget customizations and full-screen map display. Wireless phone charging, USB Type-A and Type-C ports should be included, keeping connectivity flexible.
3. Optional Hybrid powertrain
Earlier this year, Alan Bethke, Subaru’s Senior Vice President of Marketing, confirmed to Motor Trend that the company was “working on plans” for the Outback Hybrid.

While the company may follow a staggered approach, prioritizing the gas model, the Outback Hybrid should combine a 2.5-liter flat-four engine with Toyota-sourced hybrid tech, including two electric motors, one for propulsion and one for power generation. Expect a small 1.1 kWh battery and an EV-only range of a few miles. Power delivery will come via a CVT, and true to Subaru DNA, mechanical all-wheel drive will remain standard.
4. Efficiency without compromising capability

Total system output is likely to be around 200 horsepower, on par with Subaru’s current hybrid models. Despite its added size, the Outback Hybrid should return 30-35 mpg (EPA) combined. The AWD system and hybrid powertrain should offer a mix of urban efficiency and light off-roading capability, making it suitable for adventurous families. Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and X-Mode with Hill Descent Control improve its traction and control on rough terrain.
5. 2025 NY Auto Show Premiere
Subaru will reveal the next-gen Outback at the 2025 New York International Auto Show on April 16. U.S. sales are expected to begin later in the year, for model year 2026.

Whenever it becomes available, the Outback Hybrid is expected to start at around USD 40,000. With its rugged design, digitized cabin, and hybrid powertrain, the new Outback Hybrid should appeal to Subaru loyalists, while drawing conquest sales to the brand.
