Following its official preview in June last year, the Jaecoo J8 has now been spotted by our photographer Sherman Sim in Penang. Seen here with camouflage on certain sections of its body, this J8 looks very similar to what we were shown in the past.

Cues such as the 20-inch alloy wheels, pop-out door handles and white paintjob were all found on the preview car. Additionally, the design of the front bumper indicates this isn’t the facelifted model that made its debut in China in September 2024 – the J8 is known as the Chery Tiggo 9 over there.

The J8 is larger than the Tiggo 8 Pro, measuring in at 4,820 mm long (+100 mm), 1,930 mm wide (+70 mm), 1,699 mm tall and with a wheelbase spanning 2,820 mm (+110 mm). For context, the three-row J8 is comparable to models like the Kia Sorento as well as the Proton X90.

At the time of the second preview with a right-hand drive example (the first was a left-hand drive), we were told the J8 is estimated to retail for around RM200,000. The original target launch window was Q4 2024 but the delay with the J7 meant the J8’s introduction has been pushed back.

For the money, features seen on the car include full-LED lighting, twin 12.3-inch displays, four-zone climate control, heated and ventilated seats for the first and second rows, a panoramic glass roof, cooled armrest storage, a 360-degree camera and a 14-speaker Sony sound system.

As for the powertrain, it is a 2.0 litre turbocharged inline-four petrol unit serving up 249 PS and 385 Nm of torque, which is paired with a seven-speed wet dual-clutch transmission with a choice of either front- or all-wheel drive. Like the J7, the J8 is also expected to get a plug-in hybrid version.
