Within the past several months, we’ve brought you reviews of two versions of the new 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser: the base 1958 model and the mid-tier version known simply as…Land Cruiser. Now we have the keys to its more luxurious corporate cousin, the 2024 Lexus GX 550.

This moment has been more than a decade in the making. Lexus produced the previous GX for more than a decade. The all-new model is a body-on-frame vehicle based on the GA-F platform, which underpins a variety of Toyota and Lexus trucks and SUVs. That’s covered with upright, boxy styling that makes it clear the GX 550 is no wind-cheating crossover. It cruises down paved roads with the power of a 349-horsepower, 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 paired with a 10-speed automatic and gets over rough terrain with full-time four-wheel drive and a standard Torsen limited-slip locking center differential.

The GX is available in Premium, Premium+, Luxury, Luxury+, Overtrail, and Overtrail+ trim. Our test vehicle is a Luxury+ model. That plus symbol adds even more luxury to the GX, such as 22-inch wheels; power retractable running boards; semi-aniline leather seats with heating, ventilation, and massage for front-row passengers; and a 21-speaker Mark Levinson audio system. Options that include a head-up display, heated second-row captain’s chairs, and Traffic Jam Assist raise the as-tested price of our media loaner to $84,485.

Of course, we’ll do a lot of street and highway driving in the GX and tell you about its ride quality, handling, power delivery, and other on-road characteristics. We’ll also take it to some local trails where we tried out the 2024 Land Cruiser and let you know how its hardware and tech perform out there.
