With the Volkswagen ID. Buzz hitting dealerships on our side of the shore, the timing is right for a celebration on their side of the shore marking 75 years since the Type 2 was introduced. As VW’s second model, the early Transporters with the split windshield will be the automotive guest of honor at September 2025’s Goodwood Revival.

The Type 2 debuted in 1950, never really making an impact in the American market until the 1960s when the vehicle became a symbol for the American counterculture and beyond. Through 1967, the Type 2 featured a split windshield, though there were several other identifying changes over the years, easily determined by parking lights and taillights. Along with the Type 1 “Beetle,” the Type 2 was restyled the following year with several outward updates and many under the skin, especially due to new safety regulations in the U.S.

Seventy-five years later, the 2025 Goodwood Revival intends to present the most varied collection of VW Type 2 “Split Screens” ever. “The Goodwood Revival has a long history of celebrating significant vehicles – everything from the Mini and Fiat 500, to the Ferrari 250 GTO and Jaguar D-type,” says the Duke of Richmond CBE DL, founder of the Goodwood Revival. “This year it is the turn of the ‘Split Screen’ Volkswagen Type 2 … We will be celebrating this variety by bringing together a wonderfully varied collection of VW Type 2s, which will open the track each morning in colourful fashion, and pop up across the Revival site.”

The opening track parade, held at the start of each day on September 12-14th, will join a complete schedule of thirteen races. Additional to the parade laps each morning, these classic VWs will be displayed in the Tax-Exempt Classic Car Parking (how British, what?) for spectators to see.
