AutoHunter Spotlight: 1967 Ford Fairlane GTA

Ford liked to talk about the 390-powered 1966 Fairlane GT and how it could “cook a Tiger,” a dig on the Pontiac GTO. For 1967, however, Ford downgraded the GT and made a two-barrel 289 the standard engine. That means there’s a lot of Fairlane GTs that look the part but can’t get out of their own way. This 1967 Fairlane GTA convertible currently listed on AutoHunter does not suffer from that issue because it’s equipped with the newly optional big-block. It’s being offered by a dealer and includes the Marti Report, which shows its bonafides.

Ford built 2,117 Fairlane GT convertibles in 1967, so they are not common at all. This one is painted in the very 1960s color of Frost Turquoise and is complemented by a white convertible top and turquoise top boot. Other exterior features include white GT stripe on both sides, GT hood, driver-side mirror, and dual exhausts.

A set of 14-inch Styled Steel wheels with trim rings are wrapped in 215/75 Hankook Optimo H724 radial.

Inside, you’ll find an Aqua interior featuring a pair of bucket seats bisected by a center console housing a shifter to control the SelectShift Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission. This feature added the A (for “Automatic”) to the GT name because Ford was touting how a driver could specify a gear and hold it, giving control that didn’t quite exist with other brands. Other interior features include three-spoke steering wheel, power steering, AM radio, and driver-side remote mirror control.

The instrument panel includes a 120-mph speedometer surrounded by a clock and gas gauge. Aftermarket gauges mounted under the dashboard include oil pressure, temperature, and voltage. The odometer reads 30,526, though the title reads mileage-exempt.

This 1967 Fairlane GTA is powered by the optional 390, though this one is an H-code two-barrel. That makes it one of 194 built with an automatic transmission per Marti Auto Works. A four-barrel carburetor and intake currently sit atop the big-block.

A great option that’s surprisingly missing from most muscle cars is a limited-slip rear—this car has it. Gears are a highway-friendly 3.00. Power brakes, with discs up front, help slow the momentum.

It’s not difficult to grasp the nice combination of features that make this 1967 Fairlane GTA convertible what it is: big-block, bucket seats and console, and appealing trim combination.
