Today’s ubiquitous crossovers are touted for their versatility in blending car-like driving dynamics and creature comforts with the ability to easily haul cargo and passengers. Seventy years ago, Pontiac was doing the same thing – just with a little bit more chrome flair.

“This is a real V8 Pontiac Safari (only 3,760 produced), and it is in excellent restored condition,” the listing begins. “This Pontiac was a frame-off restoration. From its metallic turquoise blue and white paint to its completely restored chrome and stainless trim, this car is ready for a collection or to be driven.”
The car’s trim tag matches its aesthetic configuration, showing Turquoise Blue (code 5512) paint and Ivory and Dark Blue (code 278) upholstery. Based on the photos in the listing, the exhaust system has been customized (featuring side-exit dual outlets), but the exterior looks largely stock otherwise. One of the most prominent features of the car is its distinctive Star Chief hood ornament made in translucent amber.
The Safari was a line of station wagons that exited from 1955 through 1989 (with exception of 1982 through 1986). At least initially, the car was based on the General Motors A-body platform and shared most of its chassis elements with the Chevrolet Nomad. A magazine advertisement from the period said, “Pontiac creates an entirely new type of car combining Catalina smartness and station wagon utility.” The car was praised for its versatility; the interior has a two-bench arrangement, and the second row conveniently folds flat or ease of transporting larger cargo items.
Under the hood, power comes from a 287ci Strato Streak V8 mated to a three-speed automatic transmission. When new, Pontiac rated the motor at either 180 horsepower with a two-barrel carburetor or 200 horsepower with a four-barrel carburetor. The seller says that both the engine and the transmission have been “refreshed” and are ready for more miles. The car reportedly “shifts smoothly and cruises down the highway great.” Power brakes are equipped, too.
“This Safari is a good cruiser and one for shows or the beach. This car turns heads wherever it goes,” the listing concludes.
The asking price for this clean machine is $68,000 or best offer.
