The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has released vehicle sales data for the month of September 2024, which saw a total of 58,032 vehicles delivered to customers. This represents a drop of 19.8%, or 14,335 units, from the 72,367 units (originally reported as 71,162 units) sold in August 2024.
The August sales figure is also 14.9% (or 10,142 units) lower than that achieved in the same month in 2023. According to the association, the decrease in numbers last month stemmed from a shorter working month and was also due to consumers adopting a wait-and-see attitude pending the Budget 2025 announcement this month.
As for total industry volume (TIV) figures, 594,037 vehicles were sold in the first nine months of 2024, which is 3.9% higher than than the same period in 2023, when 571,957 units were shifted.
Vehicle production also dropped last month, with 55,383 vehicles rolling off assembly lines. This is around 20% less than in August 2024, when 69,133 units were produced. However, total vehicle production for the year remains higher at 593,050 units compared to the 566,442 units built in the corresponding period last year.
For the month of October 2024, the association said it expects sales to pick up and be higher than that recorded for August.
