Subaru announced on January 30, 2025, that it will conduct the global debut of a pair of SUVs at the 2025 Chicago Auto Show, which opens on February 6. The company did not provide all the details, but the teaser issued with the announcement showed the Forester Wilderness, which is a kitted-up version of the SUV that was leaked online last month.
The second premiere is presumably the Forester Hybrid, which was already confirmed for a 2025 release. Subaru is also testing the next-gen Outback in the U.S., but we feel that it’s a little early for it to be presented to the public.
Subaru Forester Hybrid
The 2025 Subaru Forester Hybrid will feature the company’s latest hybrid system, just introduced in the Crosstrek Hybrid here in the U.S., and in Japan. This series-parallel system pairs the FB25 2.5-liter flat-four engine with an MC2 AC synchronous electric motor. The engine, in the Crosstrek, delivers 118 kW (158 hp) and 209 Nm (154 lb.-ft.) of torque, while the electric motor generates 88 kW (118 hp) and 270 Nm (199 lb.-ft.) of torque.
Thanks to the added torque from the electric motor, the 2025 Forester Hybrid should feel noticeably more responsive than the gas model, particularly in city driving. Acceleration should be smoother and quicker at lower speeds, making it a more practical choice for urban use compared to the standard gas model.
Higher MPG & Longer Range
A motor-generator recovers braking energy and stores it in a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, which helps reduce fuel consumption. While the gas-powered Forester achieves 29 MPG (combined), the Forester Hybrid could push that figure to approximately 35 MPG (combined).
The EV mode will allow limited all-electric driving, helping reduce emissions and noise in residential areas. With lower fuel consumption, the Forester Hybrid’s range could approach 600 miles, a significant improvement over the 481-mile range of the gas model.
Strong AWD Capability
Unlike the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid, which powers the rear wheels using an electric motor, the 2025 Forester Hybrid will retain Subaru’s symmetrical AWD system with a mechanical link between the front and rear wheels. This should give it an edge in off-road performance and extreme weather conditions, maintaining the Forester’s image as a rugged, adventure-ready SUV.
Subaru Forester Wilderness
The Forester Wilderness was leaked on the web last month, revealing the main changes. Expect chunky body cladding and redesigned bumpers that enhance its rugged appeal. These elements will be complemented by a silver skid plate, a lifted suspension for improved ground clearance, and a unique wheel design that reinforce its off-road credentials.
Hybrid Possibility
We’re not sure about the powertrain strategy for the Wilderness, but it’s likely that Subaru will extend the electrified powertrain’s availability to the rugged variant. Given that the Wilderness will be positioned as a high-end trim level, customers will expect enhanced performance both on and off the road. An electrified powertrain would provide better low-end torque for off-road driving, while also improving efficiency and responsiveness, which would better justify the price premium.
